DESCRIPTION:Presentation: Understanding Cultural Appropriation in the Workplace \n\n \n\nHave you ever wondered if adopting someone else's culture is offensive? Have you been challenged when someone brought the offense to your attention? In this workshop\, the presenters will facilitate a dialogue and learning opportunities surrounding the topic of cultural appropriation in the workplace. This workshop will engage participants in an understanding of the topic as well as provide strategies to navigate those sticky situations when addressing colleagues who may be involved in cultural appropriation.\n\nCultural appropriation has been defined as such: the taking from a culture that is not one's own- of intellectual property\, cultural expressions or artifacts\, history and ways of knowledge (Ziff & Rao\, 1997)\; any instance which means commonly associated with and/or perceived as belonging to another are used to further one's own ends (Shugart\, 1997)\; aspects of marginalized/colonized cultures that are taken and used by a dominant/colonizing culture in such a way to serve the interests of the dominant.\n\n \n\nDiscussion Objectives:\n\n	Explore the concept of cultural appropriation \n	Identify the difference between cultural appropriation and appreciation\n	Understand the impact of cultural appropriation on employees in the workplace \n	Identify strategies to avoid cultural appropriation \n\n\n\nQuill Phillips:\n\nQuill Phillips serves in an inaugural role as the College Equity Officer at the Community College of Aurora (CCA) since 2015. She is responsible for implementing and overseeing CCA's Inclusive Excellence (IE) strategic initiatives which consist of training and development of faculty and staff\, recruitment and retention of employees of color\, assessment of IE efforts\, and policy review and revision. The strategic efforts implemented under the leadership of Ms. Phillips has led to an increase of racially diverse faculty and staff\, and the decrease in the student equity gaps between students of color and white students.\n\n \n\nMs. Phillips serves on the Equity and Inclusion Council for the Colorado Community College System\, and is also the CEO of QP Equity and Inclusion Consulting LLC. She has served as a social justice educator for the last eight years\, and is an alumni of the Social Justice Training Institute. She was competitively selected to be a Chief Diversity Officer Fellow with the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education in 2018. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University and has a Master of Arts in Student Affairs Administration from Michigan State University.  \n\n \n\nMike Roderique:\n\nMike Roderique serves as the Inclusive Excellence Training Coordinator for the Community College of Aurora.  In this role\, Mike facilitates events\, trainings\, and dialogue for students\, staff\, faculty\, and community members with a goal of pursuing Inclusive Excellence.  In 2014\, Mike received his M.A. in Higher Education from Morgridge College of Education at the University of Denver.
